History
The Berlin Institute of Tropical Medicine emerged from the Royal Prussian Small Pox Vaccination Institute (“Königlich-Preussisches Schutzblattern-Impfinstitut”) founded in 1802. The increasing number of travellers and the extension of international relations prompted the Berlin senate in 1965 to expand the Institution to become the state vaccination institute with a clinic for tropical medicine ( “Landesimpfanstalt mit tropenmedizinischer Beratungsstelle”).
In 1995, the Institute was renamed as the Insitute of Tropical Medicine (“Institut für Tropenmedizin”). It provides a clinic for tropical and travel medicine, HIV counselling facilities, a laboratory with emphasis on parasitology as well as teaching and research divisions. The Institute is an executive part of the Berlin insitution for central health tasks (“Berliner Betriebe für zentrale gesundheitliche Aufgaben”, BBGes). By virtue of a cooperation contract, the Institute is associated with the Charité Medical School Berlin. The head of the Institute of Tropical Medicine holds the chair of Tropical Medicine at Charité Medical School Berlin.
The main research focus is directed at the areas of Malaria, HIV/AIDS and side effects of vaccination.
Postgraduate training offered at the Institute of Tropical Medicine includes a “Diploma course in Tropical Medicine and Public Health” (DTMPH) as well as the Master of Science Programme in International Health. This study programme belongs to the spectrum of international teaching programmes of Charité Medical School. At the same time, continuous medical education for students as well as advanced training for doctors in Berlin and Brandenburg (e. g. courses in tropical and travel medicine, vaccination) is being performed.
Furthermore, the Institute has, on behalf of the Berlin Senate for Health, Environment and Consumer Protection, taken over tasks in infectious disease civil protection.
